By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA/WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO’s) was given his boxing license by the New York Athletic Commission today after the commission met for an hour and forty-five minutes to make a determination on whether Margarito was medically
fit to fight WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) on December 3rd at the Madison Square Garden in New York.Margarito met with an appointed ophthalmologist by the directions of the commission for an examination for his surgically repaired right eye. The doctor, Michael Goldstein, determined that Margarito’s eye was sound and he was fit to face Cotto.
This is a load of the mind of Bob Arum, the promoter for both fighters, as Cotto said earlier in the day that he would only fight Margarito if the bout takes place in New York. The fight would have been off if the commission had failed to approve Margarito.
Hopefully, Cotto is pleased with this news, as there’s no way out of the fight now for him. He’s got a tough fight in store for him on December 3rd and Margarito could take Cotto out again. I’m just hoping Cotto goes out on his shield if he does get stopped. I don’t want to see him taking any more knees to take the easy way out like he did last time.
